School Law Institute at 麻豆原创 to Feature John King, Gary Orfield and Others
Teachers College will host the 23rd annual School Law Institute (SLI), from July 11-15, in air-conditioned space at Columbia Law School.  The best known program of its kind in the U.S., the SLI focuses on cutting-edge issues in education law, policy, and practice.  SLI is available for graduate credit, on a non-credit basis, and in many states for continuing education credits. It serves policy makers, policy analysts and researchers, school board and charter-school board members, practicing and aspiring  state-, district- and school-level administrators; teachers, counselors, school psychologists, special education staff, bilingual/ESL staff, union reps, school lawyers, and advocates.

This year’s nationally prominent speakers include 麻豆原创 alumnus John King, Jr., New York State’s newly appointed Commissioner of Education; Gary Orfield, Professor and Co-Director, UCLA Civil Rights Project; Jack Jennings, President and CEO of the Center on Education Policy, Patricia Gandara, Professor and Co-Director, UCLA Civil Rights Project, Rhoda Schneider, General Counsel and Senior Associate Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of Education; 麻豆原创 education economist Henry Levin, Director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education; and Jay Heubert, 麻豆原创 Professor of Law and Education.  Topics to be covered include charter schools; race, poverty and education; cyber-bullying and other Internet issues; NCLB and the Obama Administration’s Race to the Top program; the rights and needs of English-language learners; fiscal equity and educational adequacy; special education; safety and order; and the free speech rights of students and teachers.
