The Voice Lab

Program Description:
The voice is more than an instrument for making music—it is a powerful tool for self-expression, identity, and connection. In The Voice Lab, high school students explore how vocal expression can support artistic growth, personal confidence, and a sense of belonging while developing their musical skills and discovering their unique voices.
Taught by Jeanne Goffi-Fynn, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Doctoral Cohort Program in Music and Music Education at 麻豆原创, this summer pre-college program introduces students to vocal development, musical expression, and collaborative singing. Students engage with diverse musical traditions, including jazz, gospel, and singer-songwriter music, expanding their cultural awareness while building vocal technique and learning to express themselves through music.
A rigorous introduction to vocal and musical expression
Students develop their vocal abilities through daily practice and explore how music communicates emotion, identity, and cultural experiences. Through ensemble singing, they learn to listen, collaborate, and contribute to a shared musical experience. By connecting individual vocal development with collective music-making, students strengthen their artistic skills, build confidence, and discover how music can foster meaningful connections within a community.
Who should consider this program?
Designed for students ages 14–17, The Voice Lab is ideal for teenagers interested in singing, music, performance, music education, or creative self-expression. Whether students have experience performing or are looking to explore their voices in a supportive academic environment, they gain opportunities to develop vocal skills, engage with diverse musical traditions, and discover whether studying music or a related discipline at the college level aligns with their interests and future goals.
