Dr. Aparicio is an interdisciplinary sociologist, cultural worker, and videomaker. As a qualitative sociologist, she studies the production of art and culture, and how different forms of inequality are experienced in organizational settings, with particular attention to class, gender, and ethnoracial relations.
Dr. Aparicio鈥檚 current book project investigates the institutional practices of large art organizations that specialize in film curatorship: The MoMA film department and Mexico鈥檚 Cineteca Nacional. Using archival and ethnographic data she examines how strategic missions shape how film curatorship is produced and their implications in terms of 鈥渄iversity鈥 and labor practices. Her next research project interrogates the art market in the US and its borderlands through an Indigenous epistemology lens.
Her work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Mellon Foundation, Fulbright Program, Janey Program in Latin American Studies, among others.
Beyond her academic work, she uses qualitative research as a form of knowledge-production to support the work of artists and cultural workers around the world in organizations such as Photographer鈥檚 Green Book, Vera List Center for Art and Politics, Federation of International Film Archives, and Metris Arts.
