Scholarly Interests
Joydeep Roy is a Visiting Professor of Economics and Education at 麻豆原创, in the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis (EPSA), where he teaches courses on the economics of higher education and advises Masters and doctoral students. He is also a Senior Economist at New York City Independent Budget Office focusing on education and educational policy involving New York City public schools. Professor Roy’s research interests revolve around access, equity and efficiency in education, with a focus on the distributional impacts of various policies and regimes. He has worked and written extensively on achievement gaps, school finance, school choice and accountability, merit aid programs and college choice, high schools and the transition to college. His current research focuses on competition among elite colleges, peer effects on high school students, Great Recession and school district competition, impact of release from desegregation mandates, and school engagement. Professor Roy holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University.
Professor Roy’s research has been published in various economics, education, and policy journals including the Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, Education Finance and Policy, Regional Studies, Education Policy Analysis Archives and Phi Delta Kappan. He is the co-author of the book Rethinking High School Graduation Rates and Trends and co-editor of two books examining teacher pay. His work has been cited in various national, state and local media including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Education Week, USA Today, PBS and Chalkbeat.
