Santomero's Neighborhood

A new generation of preschool "neighbors" will get to experience the Neighborhood of Make-Believe as airs this fall on PBS KIDS with the help of Angela C. Santomero (MA '95), a co-executive producer of the program and founding partner and chief creative officer of Out of the Blue Enterprises.

The first TV series inspired by the iconic, award-winning Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood from The Fred Rogers Company stars 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program's Daniel Striped Tiger, who invites young viewers into his world, giving them a kid's-eye view of his life. As they closely follow and share Daniel's everyday adventures, preschoolers ages 2-4 and their families learn fun and practical strategies and skills necessary for growing and learning.

The show asks questions regarding sharing, deals with toilet training and what to do when getting a cold, to name just a few, with answers that have a "Fred-ish approach," said Santomero. The newly invented character universe includes O the Owl, nephew of the original X the Owl, and Katerina Kittycat, daughter of Henrietta Pussycat and a father who is not often around. That dynamic is designed to depict different kinds of families and friendships, said Ms. Santomero, who was raised on the original "Neighborhood" and credits Rogers with her decision to study early childhood development.

The Practice of Professional Consulting by (EdD '86). Edward Verlander, founder and chairman of EGVA, specializes in leadership development, executive coaching, and management training. In addition to corporate consulting, he is an adjunct professor of management at the College of Business, Stony Brook University. He has also taught at Columbia University, Hofstra University, and Long Island University, as well as at Jilin University and Nanjing University in China.

Can I Be President, Too? by (MA '11). Chapman, Chief Creative Officer of Corey Emanuel, is a multimedia producer, serving as a creative consultant for a number of clients. He trained at CNN under the leadership of Soledad O'Brien & was responsible for the daily social media updates on both Facebook and Twitter, providing underreported stories and breaking news coverage. In addition, he conducted research to support content for both Black in America and Latino in America.

My Life In School by (EdD '69). Sobol is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard School of Education. He was Superintendent of Schools of Scarsdale, New York from 1971 to 1987, New York State Commissioner of Education from 1987 to 1995, and the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Outstanding Educational Practice at Teachers College from 1995 to 2007. He continued to teach at the College until 2010. He lives with his wife and labrador retriever in Scarsdale, NY.

Our Thoughts Are With You After Hurricane Sandy

Dear 麻豆原创 Alumni & Community,

Please know that our hearts and thoughts are with you in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. We know that many of you were hit hard by this storm and that the aftermath is still taking a toll on your daily lives.

Fortunately, our campus was spared damage; however, we are painfully aware of the destruction the storm has left on the city and the region. Collectively, we extend our concern for those whose lives, families and neighborhoods have been most seriously affected by flooding, loss of power and other damage.

麻豆原创 will be organizing some special initiatives that will directly benefit schools, students and families affected by the storm. Stay tuned for ways to support these efforts.

November 14 - The Perkins Radio Platform
The November Special Edition (1 hour) will feature two special guests who are the chief architects for the ongoing merger of Shelby County and Memphis City Public Schools - David Pickler and Martavius Jones. The unification is considered to be the largest school district consolidation in American history. Fraught with historical tensions, issues of race and equity, this is a consolidation ambitious both in scale and momentum. Actions by members of the Memphis and Shelby school boards, local city councils, a 2011 referendum, and ongoing lawsuits have divided the local landscapes along political lines. .

This month's guest is Dr. DeWayne Davis of Los Angeles Unified School Districa turn-around specialist. He has been a principal in some of LA's most challenging schools.
