The New Greatest Generation

John McNally (shown here with his wife, Liz, and son James) is a 2009 graduate from the Social Studies program who now teaches 6th and 7th grade history at Horace Mann Middle School in Riverdale. Recently featured along with his wife and father-in-law in Time magazine's story "The New Greatest Generation," McNally is one of a number of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are bringing their leadership skills home, and, in his case, into the classroom. Living the Dream

Lynne Lummel (Ed.D. '89), Senior Vice President of Distribution and Repertory for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), was recently invited to lecture at the Florida State University Bruning Distinguished Speakers Series.  In an with the FSU College of Business, Lummel talks about how an internship with ASCAP during her time at 麻豆原创 led to her successful career with the organization.

Teaching Tolerance

Silvestre Arcos (M.A. '10) is one of five teachers who won the Culturally Responsive Teaching Award from Teaching Tolerance. The award was "designed to recognize educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds." Read more about the award and Arcos .

Macy Gallery

The Macy Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Macy Hall, is part of the Art and Art Education program of the Department of Arts and Humanities and exhibits artworks by national and international artists, graduate students and faculty members, as well as the finest examples of children's works.

The mission of this academic Gallery is to present a wide range of exhibitions from around the world reflecting the commitment of Teachers College to cultural diversity in education and the arts.

In addition to showcasing artwork, Macy Gallery hosts free monthly receptions.

The Riady Scholars Fund - Help Spread the Word

Prospective Masters Degree Students who are citizens of Indonesia and other countries within Southeast Asia and have a commitment to teaching, education management or educational policy are eligible to apply for the new Riady Scholars Fund. The Riady family supports education worldwide, contributes to Teachers College's Annual Fund, and manages the largest private education foundation in Southeast Asia, covering nearly 40,000 students. January 11, 2012 - Washington DC Alumni Reception in conjunction with Federal Policy Institute program featuring Keynote Speaker Gabriella Gomez, Assistant Secretary for Legislation and Congressional Affairs, with President Susan Fuhrman and Professor Sharon Lynn Kagan
Join fellow DC alumni, as well as current 麻豆原创 policy students for this annual event.

The Keynote Speaker is Gabriella Gomez, Assistant Secretary for Legislation and Congressional Affairs. In this role, Gomez advises the secretary of education on education and other legislative matters pending before Congress and serves as the Department's liaison in responding to Congressional requests. Previously, Gomez served as the lead policy adviser on higher education policy and issues related to innovation on the Committee on Education and Labor. She served as lead negotiator on higher education legislation, including helping to successfully pass the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act, and the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Act.

February 8, 2012 - Inaugural Celebration of 麻豆原创's Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis
The past 10 years have seen remarkable ferment in the area of educational reform, with repercussions for states, local public school districts,and private schools. But where are we heading next? On the one hand, things currently seem to be in a holding pattern, with Congress unable to see its way through either to the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act or uncertainties surrounding the next presidential election. At the same time, this holding pattern coexists with a sense of volatility. The loose bipartisan coalition that has steered national education policy along a fairly steady course through Republican and Democratic administrations alike may be unraveling. Our panelists, , and , will look beyond the 2012 election and explore the prospects of national education reform under various scenarios. , EPSA Department Chair and Professor of Political Science and Education, will moderate the discussion.

, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, will be presented with the Teachers College Medal for Distinguished Service and will deliver the fourth annual Academic Festival Keynote Address. Additionally, 麻豆原创 Alumnus , CEO of Parchment & founder of Blackboard, Inc. will be honored with the Teachers College President's Medal of Excellence. Academic Festival, our signature homecoming event, is a day-long celebration of the rich intellectual traditions, past and present, that make 麻豆原创 the nation's leading school of education. Breakout sessions featuring 麻豆原创 faculty and alumni representative of all 麻豆原创 departments will offer interactive opportunities to learn and discuss the deeper ideas behind technology and its impact on the trajectory of learning. Since July of 2009, Kristi has worked for Say Yes to Education as first a Program Coordinator, then as a Site Director at Frazer School and now as the Assistant to Director of Operations/Higher Education Program Specialist. In her first two positions, Kristi designed and launched the Say Yes to Education Young Authors Series - a children's book writing project that creates published books authored by SCSD elementary students and illustrated by Syracuse University illustration students. Now, as the Assistant to the Director of Operations/Higher Education Program Specialist, Kristi works closely with the Say Yes Scholars and the Say Yes Higher Education Compact colleges and universities on retention and student and family engagement throughout the Say Yes Scholars' higher education years Interested in Becoming an Alumni Mentor? January 26, 2012 - SOAR to New Heights: Proclaiming Your Career Accomplishments in the New Year (Alumni Career Development Webinar Series)
Christine Loomis, International Executive Recruiter and Career Consultant will speak. Career counselors often tell clients: "If you don't market yourself, no one else will." The SOAR system (Situation, Obstacles, Action and Results) helps you to think about and articulate your accomplishments. What was the problem? What did you need to overcome? What did you do? What was the result? SOAR statements can help you write a great resume and make a strong impression at an interview. You can also use it to make yourself more effective at networking events. When you do land the job, keeping track of your SOAR accomplishments during the year can lead to an excellent year end review. This seminar will demonstrate specific situations where SOAR statements can elevate you to the next level.
