The Virginia and Leonard Marx Lecture
More than 30 percent of boys are involved in bullying at any particular time-either as the bully or as his victim, said James Garbarino, a professor at Cornell University and the author of Lost Boys: Why Sons Turn Violent. The ninth annual Marx Lecturer addressed a packed Horace Mann Auditorium during his talk, which stressed the necessity of creating a positive environment throughout schools in order to make bullying and harassment antithetical.

The Sussman Lecture
Children attending inner-city schools need more than a strong curriculum and good teachers-they also require the safety nets available to wealthier students, said Pedro A. Noguera at the third annual Sussman Lecture. In "City Schools and the American Dream: Reclaiming the Promise of Public Education," Noguera, the Sussman Visiting Professor of Education and a professor at NYU's Steinhardt School of Education, discussed the effects of poverty on schoolchildren.

The Julius and Rosa Sachs Lectures
Using the same ways of teaching for disparate groups of children isn't going to work, no matter how good the schools are, said Richard Rothstein, the Julius and Rosa Sachs Distinguished Lecturer (see ). Rothstein delivered the annual Sachs lecture series in three parts, with each lecture focusing on a different aspect of the struggle to attain educational equity in our nation's schools.
